How It Works
BRUTE marine oil water separators are tough, well built, simple, easy-to-operate systems.
With simple operation, these rugged separators are shipped complete with motor, pumps, piping and controls and are ready to be easily installed and operated—without delay.
 The base separators do NOT have any consumables such as filters. Although the new IMO MEPC 107(49) certified units do require a filter, the design remains simple and media replacement is made easy. BRUTE bilge separators use an organoclay filter media which will hold up to an amazing 50% of its weight in oils!
The rugged construction of the oil water separator and its lack of moving parts make maintenance minimal.
Simple operation and reliability are the result of simple / efficient design and the use of high quality components.
These marine oil water separator units are designed to operate automatically and monitor and adjust to your conditions. Self priming systems mean hassle free operation. There is no need for these oil water separator units to be installed on a flat, level, or even immobile surface. These BRUTE separators will work at a 30° pitch — even while ship is in motion!

In January of 2005, many countries began requiring new ships and ships replacing oil water separators (over 400 tons) to meet the IMO MEPC 107(49) regulations. This regulation requires removal of not only free oil as the previous regulation did, but also what is called "fluid C". Also oil content monitors are required to track results of separation. This new requirement has significantly raised the price of a bilge separator and limited the separators to choose from. The BRUTE Series 107 brings you the best, economical system available today to meet this new requirement. Our filter exchange program makes it easy.

Oil Water Separator
This new option can save a tremendous amount of money on a separator in the situation when large amounts of water need to be processed that are mostly clean, but must be monitored and processed if oil content is above the limit. As an example 400 gpm can be processed from a pond or tank and moniored continuously. The separator is bypassed until it is needed and then processes the oily water at 45 gpm when needed.

U.S. Coast Guard Certified
Our line of BRUTE marine Oily Water Separator is certified by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). These certifications include both the older IMO MEPC 60(33) certification and the new IMO MEPC 107(49) certification. Units were tested by certification labs to operate within the limits and regulations of the IMO standards. Coast Guard certification is therefore available for your unit as an option if you need it.
IMO - International Maritime Organization
The IMO has established the standards that have to be met for certification. Our BRUTE units have been tested to these standards and the testing verified by the USCG for regulations 107(49).

What is the BRUTE oil water separator?
Designed to fit a small space on ships, the BRUTE is a simple, very effective solution for bilge applications. In addition, we have found the oil separating capability of the unit suited to many other applications, both marine and oil & gas and industrial.
In what applications can the BRUTE separator be used?
While the primary use for the BRUTE system is still bilge oily water separation, the BRUTE unit can be used in any application where oil and water need separating. The simplicity of the system and its flexibility have made it popular in applications from compressor oil to car/truck wash to large platforms and FPSOs and everything in between.
Do I have to provide exact specs or can you help me with specifications that will meet my needs?
You may provide us with exact specifications for your proposed separator and we will be happy to provide a bid. Or if you call our expert staff we can help you design the specifications that will work for your application.
What if I need a different size than the 5 sizes you offer?
The standard separator ranges from 2-45 gpm. These are the units we stock and sell the most. We can however, easily design a different size and propose a solution to much larger applications.
How does this separator handle emulsified oil?
Emulsified oil can be separated in the BRUTE system by applying various pre and post separation treatments and filtering. The standard IMO MEPC 107(49) certified unit comes standard with a post filter that will remove emulsions. Many other applications also include the need for filters.
Just how much motion can these units handle and still operate effectively?
The BRUTE oily water separators were designed to handle motion and vibration on ships and will continue to operate even at a 30 degree tilt. These are rugged, well built units that can stand up to all kinds of harsh environments.
