U
ullage opening
a small, covered opening in the top of a cargo tank through which measurements are made to determine the level of the liquid in the tank.
ultimate strength
see tensile strength.
ultrasonic testing
a method of nondestructive testing of steel bars, plates or parts with high frequency sound waves produced with electronic equipment. the test is used for locating internal or surface discontinuities or inhomogeneities in materials.

when used in relation to section 311(a)(5) of the CWA, mean the states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Pacific Island Governments.
