Foolishly we broke first rule of enlightened self-interest.
Rule #1: Don’t crap where you eat! And we do it so well!
Within the commercial marine industry in the USA, the water’s health concerns or rather regulations were pretty much limited to keeping oil out of the water. Now we are now seeing dumped raw sewage washing up on beaches across the world. Only when tourist areas being shut down are affecting the economies of the richer developed nations—has the pollution even been newsworthy. There’s nothing like fresh poop and hypodermic needles on your beach to give you a bit of religion and righteous indignation.
Ballast water has given us in the USA a nice new little imported invasive species—the Zebra Mussel that is plugging up piping systems and choking out native marine life and causing major havoc in most (stay tuned) of our lakes and rivers.
We could go on forever here and we’re only touching the tip of the (quickly shrinking) iceberg regarding our defiling of the water. Stay Tuned!
The United States EPA has now been sued successfully to begin enforcement of the Clean Water Act and effective 12/19/2008 all the rules or rather exclusions are changing.
Actually—there have not been many rules for the commercial marine industry. They are now going to have to have permits and manage 27 different waste streams, 26 of which have been pretty much ignored on the federal level. States have been tightening up regulations but now Federal law is coming into play and harsh penalties and enforcement are coming soon.
The Federals are coming! All the rules have changed.
There are very few boat operators on the inland waters who have a comprehensive plan for handling their water wastes, but there are the enlightend few that are already putting NOTHING OVERBOARD.
To that end—we can help.
