The SSVEW should be provided with pre-treatment to remove heavier loads of solids to reduce loadings to the oil water separator section of the SSVEW sytem. The typical layout should consist of a presettling/separation tank with a cone bottom and sludge pumpout system to remove settled sludges. Skimoil can provide this presettling system if desired.
When a permanent, formal SSVEW system is required we recommend an in-ground, concrete sump to provide presettling, equalization and system feed pumpout water volume prior to the SSVEW system to reduce heavy solids loads. The design should incorporate a two or three chambered sump design. Each settling chamber volume should be a minimum of 10 minutes of retention, while the effluent pump minimum volume should be 5 minutes of retention. The chambers can be cleaned out using a vacuum truck, shoveling or an inverted pyramid hopper bottom can be designed into the sump and a sludge pumpout system can be used.
